What is LED hydroponic lighting?

If this is your first time experimenting with hydroponics, you might be wondering what LED hydroponic lighting is and what you need to look out for when shopping.

To start with, LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are one of the newest forms of hydroponic lighting. They’re also the most cost-efficient and energy-efficient options available on the market. LED hydroponic lighting relies heavily on the LED chip inside — this has the most effect on the quality of the light i.e. the spectrum (colours) and photon flux (brightness) produced.

If you’re wondering why colour matters for your indoor plants, we’ve got you covered. Various studies have shown that certain colours influence plant growth during indoor gardening, affecting root and flower formation. In fact, the majority of plants will complete a normal growth cycle if they’re exposed to both blue and red grow lights.

Adding other colours like green, far-red and deep blue with supplemental lighting will improve the growing process even more as richer colours give your plants more information about their environment. Here’s a quick rundown on how your plants interpret these colours.

  • Red — This component is needed for photosynthesis, stem elongation and signal light.
  • Far-red — Signal of neighbours and competition for light, leading to stem elongation and flowering (red light in the 610 – 720 spectrum range promotes flowering and budding).
  • Deep blue — Violet-blue light in the 400 – 520 nanometer range encourages chlorophyll absorption, photosynthesis and growth.

Most LED growing lights offer both kinds of colour spectrum lighting, so you can get more light and all the benefits from one set of LED hydro lights! There are also full-spectrum lighting systems available — these appear white to the human eye but often lean towards a certain colour like red, blue or green. Your plants will still reap the benefits of these colours while you can examine the growth and health of your plants more easily.

What’s the difference between fluorescent, HPS and LED hydroponic lighting?

At Hydrocentre Hydroponics, we offer an extensive range of lighting options to boost your plant growth including fluorescent lights, HPS lights and of course, LED hydroponic grow lights — so what’s the difference?

  • Fluorescent lighting — These grow lights provide almost all blue light waves which make them excellent for growing foliage plants (without flowers or fruit) and starting seedlings. Because blue light supports photosynthesis and leaf growth, most plants will be able to live and grow under these lights.

  • HPS lighting — High-pressure sodium (HPS) lights produce more of a yellow/red colour in the spectrum and are often used to extend the natural “day” length for your plants, imitating summer conditions. The low blue content of HPS will make a plant less compact, unlike LED Grow lights.
  • LED hydroponic lighting — These grow lights are designed to maximise the spectrum of colour and provide maximum coverage and high efficacy while also saving energy and creating less heat exposure for your plants. LED lights are recommended for all kinds of plants but it's important to know that the spectrum is a professional colour blend.

How long to run your LED grow lights for various different plants

Plants need darkness almost as much as they need light, so it’s important to understand how much light vs how much darkness your plants really need. Different plants have different needs, so you will need to do some homework (or contact our team!) to find the right balance that will help your plants grow.

Here are a few quick tips to get you started.

  • Short day plants — examples: strawberries, cauliflower, chrysanthemums — these plants need a long period of darkness to photosynthesise and produce flowers. The short-day cycle imitates nature’s environment for your plants to flower in springtime, so if they are exposed to more than 12 hours of light per day, they are unlikely to flower.
  • Long-day plants — examples: wheat, potatoes, spinach, lettuce — the long-day cycle imitates the natural environment of summer-flowering plants and require up to 18 hours of sunlight per day.
  • Day-neutral plants — examples: rice, eggplant, roses — these are the most flexible plants you can grow, so see what they respond to and compromise for a lighting schedule that’s right in the middle e.g. 14 hours of light per day.

Whether you choose LED hydroponic lighting, HPS lighting or fluorescent lighting, you’ll need to keep a close eye on plant growth and adjust your light schedule accordingly. Of course, if you ever need assistance or advice, we’re here to help! Contact us online for advice that’s tailored specifically to your crops.

FAQs about LED hydroponic grow lights

Can LED grow lights get hot?

Like any device that consumes electricity, LED lights can get warm… but they won’t get “hot”. In fact, most LED lights are reasonably cool to the touch even after running for hours on end, so there is no danger of overheating or inhibiting plant growth.

Do I need a reflector if I have LED grow lights?

LED lights do not need reflectors as the diodes have lenses that direct the light down towards the plants.

How far should my LED grow lights be from my plants?

LED grow lights can usually be kept at a distance of 20-30cm from the top of your plants for optimal growth. If you’re unsure about whether the light is too hot for your plants or too close, place your hand under the light at the top of your plants. If it’s a comfortable temperature for you, it’s a comfortable temperature for your plants! If you need some professional recommendations and advice, contact us online today.

Should I choose lamps or bar lights?

It depends on the size of the crop but generally speaking, we recommend bar lights as they offer more coverage over your plants. We offer bar lights in a huge range of sizes, wattages and colour spectrums to ensure you get the best performance out of your plants.

I’m new to hydroponics. Do you offer lessons?
