Flood and drain trays are useful for Flood and Drain beds and pots, as well as trickle fed beds or pots.

Can be used with any media but to get the best a well draining media like expanded clay is flooded every 2 hours for 15 minutes. The nutrient fills the root zone soaking the roots and filling the porus clay pebbles/balls. After 15 mintues the drain cycle allows the water to receed and the retreating liquid draws air into the root zone super aerating the plants roots.

Pots sitting in the tray can also be used. Flooding, or ebb and flow as it is sometimes known,  can also be just to saucer height and using an absobant media like Perlite, Coconut coir or others in pots will absorb the nutrient upwards if dry and if the tranistion is short, then the media will not draw up too much water if already moist. The timing is akey skill here and can yeild some excellent results without trying pots down to certain postions and irrigation lines.
